As I stood taking this photograph, early in 2022, it became clear just how much the Covid lockdowns of 2020 and 2021 have taken a huge toll on Melbourne.  What was once the "Worlds most liveable city" became the "Worlds most locked down city", its heart and soul being torn apart by the endless restrictions imposed on the residents and how they were enforced by authorities.  At any given point before the pandemic, there would have been hundreds if not thousands of tourists and locals enjoying the warm summer evening and the nightlife the city is famed for and yet, there was none of that 'buzz', only sporadic groups of couples and families seemingly intent on getting to where they needed to be as soon as possbile.
The beauty of photography though is that it captures whats in front of the lens rather than whats behind and as I looked at the familiar city skyline of the place that has been such a welcoming and wonderful adopted home town, it gave me hope that those carefree days will be upon us again once more.
